From October 5–9, 2026, Octapharma Plasma is proud to recognize International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW), a time dedicated to increasing awareness of plasma donation, celebrating plasma donors, and highlighting the importance of plasma-derived medicines for people living with rare, chronic, and life-threatening conditions.
For our donors, it is also an opportunity to recognize something worth celebrating: the difference you make every time you donate!
What Is International Plasma Awareness Week?
International Plasma Awareness Week is an annual celebration that raises awareness of contributions from our donors and centers that collect their lifesaving donations.
Plasma donations help create medicines used by patients with chronic and life-threatening diseases, including bleeding disorders and immunodeficiencies. Plasma-derived therapies can play a crucial role in both emergency and surgical situations.
Throughout IPAW, plasma collection organizations, donors, patients, and communities come together to raise awareness about plasma donation and recognize the people who help make these important therapies possible.
Why Is Plasma So Important?
Plasma is the gold-colored liquid portion of your blood and makes up about 55% of your blood. It carries red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, nutrients, and proteins throughout the body.
Plasma is sometimes called the “gift of life” because of its essential role in lifesaving therapies. For some patients, plasma-derived therapy may be needed on a routine basis to maintain a healthy life, and as more conditions become treatable, demand for plasma-derived medicines continues to grow.
One of the most important facts about plasma is that it cannot be manufactured. There is no artificial substitute for donated human plasma, which means the availability of plasma-derived therapies depends on generous donors.
How Does Plasma Donation Work?
Plasma donation is different from whole blood donation.
During a process called plasmapheresis, whole blood is drawn and separated into plasma and other blood components. The plasma is collected while red blood cells and most other blood components are returned to the donor.
The body also replaces donated plasma within 24 to 48 hours, while proteins are replaced over the following days.
This process allows donors to continue making an important contribution to patients who rely on plasma-derived therapies.
Your Donation Can Make a Lasting Impact
Behind every plasma donation is the potential to become part of someone else’s life-changing story.
Millions of patients rely on plasma-derived therapies each year to help manage chronic and life-threatening conditions.
At Octapharma Plasma, we are one of the largest plasma collection organizations, connecting generous donors with patients whose lives depend on plasma-derived therapies. Every donation can help create medicines used to treat people with rare and chronic conditions around the world.
Celebrating the People Behind Every Donation
International Plasma Awareness Week is ultimately about raising awareness of plasma donation and recognizing the people who make it possible.
It is an opportunity to highlight the impact of donors and help more people understand how plasma donations contribute to medicines that patients around the world depend on. Every donor plays an important role in helping make plasma-derived therapies possible.
Whether this is your first donation or your fiftieth, your generosity matters. Every donation has the potential to help support patients living with rare, chronic, and life-threatening conditions.
By sharing your experience and why you choose to donate, you can also help others better understand the importance of plasma donation and the difference donors make every day.
How to Celebrate International Plasma Awareness Week
You don’t have to stop making a difference when your donation is complete. IPAW is also a chance to help more people understand why plasma donation matters.
During International Plasma Awareness Week, you can:
- Wear blue, the official color of IPAW, and show your donor pride.
- Share why you donate with a friend or family member.
- Share your experience on social media using #InternationalPlasmaAwarenessWeek.
- Invite someone to learn about plasma donation and its importance.
- Celebrate the impact you are making with every donation.
The simple conversation about why you donate can help someone else better understand the role plasma donors play in helping patients around the world.
Thank You for Helping Save Lives
International Plasma Awareness Week gives us a special reminder to say what we feel all year long: Thank you!
Thank you for your time. Thank you for your generosity. And thank you for being part of a community helping make plasma-derived therapies possible for patients who depend on them.
This October 5–9, join Octapharma Plasma in celebrating International Plasma Awareness Week—and the extraordinary difference donors make, one donation at a time.
